Increase in Statistics Capacity and Knowledge of International merchandise trade Statistics enhanced.

Seminar on International Merchandise Trade Statistics; WTO tariff databases and Nama Modaltities started on Jan.10th 2011. The Seminar is in a chain of technical support acitivities of WTO. The Seminar is significantly important to long-term development of international merchandise trade statistics. This is a chance for statisticians to increase their statistical capacity and state agencies to enhance their knowledge of WTO tariff databases, modalities of tax reduction NAMA in agenda framework of Doha development.

Attending the Seminar, there are Leaders and Representatives from relevant Ministries and Administrations (Ministry of Finance, Minstry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Planning and Investment, Ministry of Agriculture & Rural Development, State Bank…etc), officers who are in charge of statistics and import-export tax duty  from General Department of Vietnam customs and local customs Departments.

During four days from Jan.10th to 13th 2011, leading Experts of WTO, International Trade Centre (ITC), United Nations Ecomomic and Social Commission for Asean and the Pacific (UNESCAP) will present definitions and concepts of international merchandise trade statistics (IMTS); skills of analysing and evaluating internation trade statistics (ITS) data; WTO tariff databases and Modalities of tax reduction NAMA.

This is the first  time for Vietnam to organize The Seminar on International Merchandise Trade Statistics in the assistance of WTO Secretariat. ITS is significantly important to policy making, macro-economics operation and management as well as supervising and evaluating impact of commitment framework, internationl trade agreements on a nation. Bilaterally with ITS data, WTO tariff databases play an important role in supporting nations’ negotiation to access international market as well. Regarding to tariff, modalities of tax reductions in non-agricultural market access negotiation NAMA in the programme framework of Doha development is also specially interested by WTO members.

Stating in the Opening, The Deputy Director General Vu Ngoc Anh highly appreciated significance and importance of the Seminar. He believes that with conduction of leading experienced Experts in ITS and tariff field, the Seminar is a successful and important activity, contributing to the country development, increasing ITS capactity as well as introducing WTO tariff databases and NAMA Modalities to relevant Ministries and Authorities.

The Deputy Director General-Vu Ngoc Anh stated in opening of the Seminar.
