Highlights of bilateral merchandise trade between Vietnam and Malaysia during 2006-2012

Vietnam Customs Trade Statistics show that  the total value of merchandise trade between Vietnam and Malaysia in 2012 reached USD 7.9 billion, 17.2% higher than that of 2011 and doubled the total of 2009. As a result, in the period of 2009-2012, the growth rate in total value of bilateral merchandise trade between Vietnam and Malaysia gained 24%.

In 2012, due to the sharp increase in exports (58.7%) and slight fall in imports (13%), Vietnam was at the first time in trade surplus of USD 1.08 billion after facing with trade gap in years.


Export:  in 2012, Malaysia was ranked as 5th place of more than 200 exporting markets  from  Vietnam with the total export value of USD 4.5 billion, 58.7% higher than 2011


Two main exported commodities to Malaysia in 2012 were: crude oil with the highest turnover of USD 1.1 billion, rose by 5.9% as compared to 2011 and accounted for 22.4% of Vietnam’s total export turnover from Malaysia; computer, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof with the total export value of USD 855 million, 8 times higher than that of 2011 and accounted for 19% of Vietnam’s total export turnover from Malaysia.
Trade statistics disseminated recently by Vietnam Customs show that in the first 7 months of 2013, the total of export value from Vietnam to Malaysia reached USD 2.87 billion, climbed up by 21.6% in comparison of the same period of 2012. The main export commodities were: crude oil, computer, electrical products, spare-parts and components...
Imports: Malaysia was ranked at 8th exporter among all the exporter of goods to Vietnam in 2012 with the total value of USD 3.41 billion, edged down by 13% as compared with 2011. In the meanwhile within ASEAN, Malaysia takes the 3rd place, just was led by Singapore and Thailand.
Computer, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof was the main group of commodity with the highest total import value of USD 662 million, sharply went up by 35% as compared to the result of 2011.
Other Vietnam’s main imported groups of commodity from Malaysia  included: animal, vegetable fats and oils with the import turnover of USD 508.3 million, 8.9% lower than 2011; plastics with the import turnover of USD 276 million, 11.4% higher than 2011


In the first 7 months of 2013, the total value of import from Malaysia reached USD 2.33 billion, climbed up by 21.3% as compared with the same period of 2012. Computer, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof; animal, vegetable fats and oils; plastics …are kept being the main imports of Vietnam from Malaysia during this time.
