Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in the first half of April, 2019

The Vietnam Customs Statistics announced that in the first half (01-15/4/2019) of  April-2019 , Vietnam’s total exports of  US dollars 9.72 billion and imports  of  US dollars 10.47 billion resulted in a trade deficit of nearly US dollars 0.75 billion. Accordingly, the total value of export and import turnover of Vietnam in the first half of April was US dollars 20.19 billion, down by 10% as compared to the second half of March-2019.

Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods from January to the first half of April of 2019 totaled US dollars 136.47 billion in value terms. It posted a growth of 7.8% (equivalent to USD 9.89 billion) from the same period of previous year. In which, the total merchandise exports value was up 5.7% to nearly US dollars 68.55 billion and the total merchandise imports value was up 4.5%, to US dollars 64.53 billion.

In the view of FDI traders, the value of exportation and importation in the first half of April reached USD 12.37 billion, down by 14% as compared to the second half of March 2019. Therefore, from January to April 15th of 2019, the total value of FDI merchandise trade went up 4.8% to US dollar 86.89 billion.

Export:

When compared with the second half of March-2019, export of  first half of April was down by 17.3%, mostly as a result of the climb-down registered in telephone, mobile phone and part thereof (down by 28.5% - USD 771 million); computer electrical products and part thereofs (down by 18.4% - USD 272 million); machine tools and equipments (down by 18.8% - USD 148 million); textiles and garments (down by 10.7% - USD 138 million)…

Import:

In the first half of April 2019, import down by 2% when compared with the second half of March, mainly reflecting the evolution of computer, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof (down by 6% - USD 133 million); machine, equipment, tools and instruments (down by 4.2% - USD 67 million);  telephone, mobile phones and part thereof (down by 17.8% - USD 96 million); motor vehicles (down by 27% - USD 52 million); cashew nuts (down by 55.2% - USD 41 million)…
