Preliminary assessment of Vietnam international merchandise trade performance in November and the 11 months of 2015

Highlights
1. In November of 2015, trade statistics compiled by Vietnam Customs recorded a 2.1% downwards in total external merchandise turnover of Vietnam as compared to the result of a month earlier. In which exports went down 2.9%, to USD 13.89 billion and imports reduced 1.3%, to USD 13.63 billion. Consequently, there was a USD 263 million surplus in Vietnam’s trade balance in this month.
2. From the beginning to November of 2015, Vietnam‘s trade-in-goods reached US dollars 299.35 billion in value terms, 10.3% higher than the corresponding period of 2014. As compared to result of the 11 months of 2014, total merchandise exports value rose 7.9% to US dollars 148.24 billion and the total merchandise imports value rose 12.7% to US dollars 151.11 billion. Accordingly, Vietnam’s trade balance for January- November period of 2015 was in the deficit of US dollars 2.87 billion.   
3. Trade data disseminated recently by Vietnam Customs announced that the total value of exportation and importation by foreign direct invested (FDI) traders was USD 191.01 billion in total in the 11 months of 2015, up by 17.8 % as compared to the result of corresponding period of 2014. Total value of FDI exportation was USD 101.53 billion and expanded by 18.3%. On import side, the total value of those companies was USD 89.48 billion and picked up by 17.2%.
 


Main Exports and Imports                        
4. The October of 2015 to November of 2015 reduction in total merchandise exports was mainly contributed by the downturns in textiles and garments (down by USD 271 million); fishery products (down by USD 75 million); rice (down by USD 50 million);…
 


5. The commodities, of which the upwards resulted in significant expansion in total exports value in January-November period of 2015 as compared to that of 2014, were as follows: telephones, mobile phones and parts thereof (up by USD 6.47 billion); computers, electrical products, spare-parts and components thereof  (up by USD 3.95 billion); textiles and garments (up by USD 1.69 billion)...
 
6. The October of 2015 to November of 2015 reduction in total merchandise imports was due to the downwards in telephones, mobile phones and spare-parts thereof (down by USD 148 million); other means of transportation, parts and accessories thereof (down by USD 105 million); iron and steels (down by USD 53 million)...


 
7. In the 11 months of 2015, Vietnam Customs Statistics recorded a strong growth in value terms of some imported commodities, which led to the upturns in total as compared to performance of the corresponding period in 2014. They were as follows: machine, equipment, tools and instruments (up by USD 4.97 billion); computers, electrical products and parts thereof (up by USD 4.46 billion); telephones, mobile phones and parts thereof (up by USD 2.19 billion) …
 
    Trading Partners
8. From the beginning to November of 2015, Vietnamese merchandise trade with trading partners in Asia was totaled USD 195.78  billion in value terms, which moved up 9.1% as compared to the same period of 2014. Trade-in-goods of Vietnam with America followed, which reached USD 50.55 billion and increased by 19.3%. The values of other continents were Europe: USD 42.85 billion, up by 10.5%;  Oceania: USD 5.34 billion, down by 16.6% and Africa: USD 4.83 billion, up by 10.9% in comparison with the same period of last year.


 
9. Regarding the following Chart, the United States of America was the biggest destination of Vietnamese products with the total value of US dollars 30.4 billion in the 11 months of 2015; China was the second biggest one; and then Japan, Republic of Korea, Hong Kong….
 


10. On import side, China was the biggest partner exporting goods to Vietnam with the value of US dollars 45.0 billion from the beginning to November of 2015, and then: Republic of Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Thailand, United States of America, Singapore, Malaysia, …
